The Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber gave businesses small and large an opportunity to showcase their products and services and network with each other during their annual PrimeTime Business Expo on September 12.
With a sponsorship provided by Mediacom Business for the second consecutive year, the Expo included 81 vendors representing a variety of local businesses and organizations. “Our goal has always been to support local businesses and give them the connectivity tools necessary to be successful. Those successful businesses contribute to the economic growth in this area," Jessica Guilfoyle of Mediacom Business shared. "The purpose of this event is to expose what the Valdosta business community has to offer. Each vendor gets an opportunity to show off a small part of their company and network in a low-stress environment with other businesses and consumers. This year we were really lucky to also have some Georgia Grown vendors, which was very special for us,” said membership and events director for the Chamber, Chloe Wade. Comport Keepers, a senior home care facility in Valdosta, had nothing but positive reviews on the PrimeTime Business Expo. "Comfort Keepers has participated in the PrimeTime Business Expo for many years and we have enjoyed the new clients we have met there along with socializing with our fellow Chamber members. We are looking forward to next year already," Scott Register, owner of Comfort Keepers Valdosta, said. Marcotek Digital Office Solutions, winner of the “Best Overall Booth” award shared those same sentiments. "All of us at Marcotek had a great time at this year's Expo. We were able to talk with many Chamber and community members that we had not previously had an opportunity to meet. This helped us to not only obtain many new leads for prospective new Marcotek clients but it also helped us to meet many new businesses that we can use their services,” said Keith Norris of Marcotek Digital Office Solutions. This year, the Chamber decided to create an additional spotlight for businesses who are a part of the "Georgia Grown" program, a brand made up of business and consumers who want to buy and promote Georgia's locally grown products. The Daylily Store, Kickin K Soap, Carroll's Sausage & County Store, Wild Adventures and The Pour House all represented the "Georgia Grown" exhibition by standing front row and having their booths adorned with peach-shaped balloons. The Chamber is already looking forward to next year’s PrimeTime Business Expo in September 2020. The Chamber Ambassadors honored The Pour House with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 20, 2019 to celebrate their new Chamber membership and to let the citizens of Valdosta know about their catering services.
Described as a “mobile vintage bar”, The Pour House started as a small wine bar in the back of their retail store. The company acquired a 1966 bumper pull horse trailer and decided to convert it into a minibar. Nicknaming it ‘Minnie’, The Pour House decided to test it out at their first mobile catering job at a wedding in April 2019, which yielded great results. Robbie Pittman, owner of The Pour House, wanted to give the Lowndes County area an inimitable new service while contributing to the resident’s happiest memories. “I am a lifetime resident of Lowndes County and wanted to bring a unique service to our community. I love what I do because I love making someone’s special day “special” and seeing people happy.” Pittman said. The Pour House is a member of Georgia Grown, a program that recognizes business whose products are directly from Georgia agriculture. Pittman said this is what truly sets them apart. “We serve fresh from the farm local ingredients in all of our signature cocktails.” She said. The party doesn’t stop there; Pittman plans on introducing several more mobile units to rent for any event through The Pour House. This way more customers can be served. “We aren’t only fabulous fresh cocktails and wine serving bartenders; we are the bar! We are going to bring a truly unique way to entertain your guests.” She said. The Pour House is a proud member of the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce. “The Valdosta-Lowndes County helped get the word out about us in every way. We decided to hold the ribbon cutting to introduce ourselves to the community.” Pittman said. The Career Skills Program, also known as JTEST-AI (Job Training, Employment Skills Training, Apprenticeships and Internships), is a vocational program hosted by the Department of Defense SkillBridge Initiative. The program is designed to prepare Service men of all branches for the transition from military to civilian careers and focuses on the practical application of learned skills that can later lead to employment. The Career Skills Program offers both vocational and technical training. This training is separated into three categories: apprenticeships, internships and on-the-job training. To qualify for the program, an Airman must complete 180 continuous days of active duty service and expect to be discharged or released within 180 days. Participation must be approved by the first Field Grade Officer who is authorized to impose non-judicial punishment in the Airman’s chain of command. The Chamber extends this opportunity to Airmen nearing the end of their Military service with the hopes of providing invaluable workplace skills needed for the eventual career field of their choosing. La Peachez Clark, Events and Military Engagement Director at the Chamber is the Chamber’s very first Career Skills intern as well as a testament to the effectiveness of the program. Clark became aware of program after a former Chamber employee reached out to the Career Skills Program coordinator at Moody Airforce Base with a listing of openings for interns. Clark describes transitioning from a military career to a civilian career as difficult as many servicemen receive a culture shock when readjusting to civilian life. “After members leave the military they do not always have the opportunity to find a job right away,” Clark said. “The transition is not always smooth depending on the military member’s skill set and coping with the way things are in the civilian sector.” The Career Skills Program seeks to make that transition easier. Clark believes that a helping hand in the transition from military to civilian life is owed to servicemen and women. “We have sacrificed so much for our country called ‘Home of the Free and Land of the Brave!’ ” Clark said. “It is a way of paying it forward.” According to Clark, the Chamber offers Airmen looking for that helping hand an opportunity to intern with an organization that works intimately with the local community. The opportunity has allowed Clark a peak into the world of civilian business that she will soon reintegrate into. “It has opened my eyes to the way business is conducted in the civilian world opposed to what I have grown accustomed to in the military,” Clark said. “It has enabled me to make an informed decision with the correct career path I should take post retirement.” For more information about internship opportunities, contact Lauren Pope at 229-247-8100, ext. 231 or lpope@valdostachamber.com The Chamber Ambassadors honored Ole Times Country Buffet as the Leading Business of the Week for September 9, 2019.
